The 'red-white-blue' bag as it's also known, is originally from Japan via Taiwan and then to China and particularly Hong Kong. The fabric is cheap, strong, light and weatherproof. The familiar woven pattern has been part of Hong Kongers' collective memories ever since it was first used to make bags in the 60s.

It's as iconic as Warhol soup cans thanks to the artist Stanley Wong, who created his Red White Blue artwork series celebrating the famous fabric.
