Bit specific, I hear you say. Well yes. And no. They are a beautiful device for straining your mint juleps - for holding back the mint leaves and ice. BUT, I make ice tea with the same situation - lots of ice and mint to sieve as you pour. They are also great as a strainer for 'big tea' the kind with lots of er, flowers and stuff in them.
According to Kevin Kos, originally, it was placed directly into a julep cup "by Southern gentlemen so they could sip their mint juleps without getting crushed ice or mint in their teeth or on their mustaches".
They fit in most 8cm ish diameter glasses if you want to use them in the glass.
The mint julep - official drink of the Kentucky Derby.
